Concept project Restaurants Restaurant, Kraków

Website and system for a restaurantOgnisko.

A restaurant website that collects bookings, sells vouchers and tells the staff what is happening in the dining room.

Ognisko is a made-up restaurant in Kraków’s Kazimierz district that cooks on a single wood-fired oven. We built it more than a website with a menu. Guests pick a table on the floor plan and buy vouchers as gifts, while the staff see every booking on a timeline and mark dishes as sold out with one click. Whatever changes in the panel shows up on the website right away.

This is a concept project. Ognisko is a made-up business, but the website really works: you can click through it on desktop, tablet and phone. The forms do not send data anywhere. It was designed for a Polish business; here you see its English version.

How we thought it through

Four decisions behind this website.

  1. 01

    The problem

Guests want to sit by the oven or by the window, but over the phone they cannot see the room. They call, ask, and still end up at the table by the door.

    What we did

Booking with a floor plan. Once you pick the day, time and number of people, the plan shows which tables are free, taken or too small. Times with no free table switch off by themselves, and after booking the guest gets a code and a calendar file.

    What it gives

Guests choose a specific seat themselves, in a minute, and the staff no longer take calls asking about tables.

  2. 02

    The problem

Gift vouchers come only on paper and only at the restaurant. In December there is a line at the bar, and last-minute gifts get bought somewhere else.

    What we did

A voucher shop: an amount or a tasting dinner for two, three designs, a personal message and a preview of the voucher that changes with every word. Once paid, the voucher gets a number and can be downloaded right away.

    What it gives

The restaurant sells gifts at 11 pm too, without any help from the staff.

  3. 03

    The problem

Bookings live in a notebook, and the waiter does not know which table frees up at 8 pm. A dish runs out, but the website still shows it.

    What we did

A staff panel: a timeline of 12 tables with the whole day’s bookings, a guest list with statuses, a daily menu with a “sold out” switch and voucher redemption by number.

    What it gives

The whole dining room on one screen, and the menu on the website always matches what is in the kitchen.

  4. 04

    The problem

Guests on a diet have to read the whole menu and ask the waiter, and wine pairing is left until the end of the dinner.

    What we did

A menu with “vegetarian” and “gluten-free” filters, a counter of matching dishes and a switch that shows a paired wine under every dish.

    What it gives

Guests know what they will eat and drink before they sit down.

Inside

Pages that do the work.

Booking

A table chosen on the floor plan

The kitchen with the oven, a counter with stools, a bench along the wall, windows onto the street and a private room. Every table knows its number of seats and whether it is taken at the chosen time, and the summary beside it updates as you go.

Vouchers

A voucher you can see before you buy it

A six-step wizard and a voucher shaped like a ticket with a stub, in three colors. Once paid, it gets a number, and a print-ready image is drawn right in the browser.

Staff panel

The whole dining room on one screen

The day’s numbers, room occupancy and a timeline that shows every booking: online, by phone and the one made a moment ago on the website. A click opens the guest’s details.

Menu

A menu that knows what has run out

Diet filters, a wine pairing under every dish and a “sold out today” badge the staff switch on in the panel. The change appears in the menu right away, even in a menu that is already open.

Numbers you can check yourself

Fast on phones, not just pretty.
